Why We Need a Savior
[00:00:00] This let’s pray. Lord. You have us here on the front lines the battle lines. We’re in the world but we are not of the world. You tell us that we are the light we are the salt. So Lord I pray that we act like salt and light. And we’re out here doing your bidding your will. Specially as we’re talking about. The fight for life. So Lord I pray that you just bless. Rachael Kohn In their ministry the pregnancy care center here in Nile’s.
[00:00:39] And Ladas is we getting here word. I just pray as today as Palm Sunday.
[00:00:44] That you just remind us of what happened over 2000 years ago and how we received eternal life because of what Christ did the cross of Calvary. And I pray this in jesus name.
[00:01:04] Today is Palm Sunday. It’s the day that we celebrate. The triumphal entry. Of Jesus. Into Jerusalem one week. Before. Well less than a week before he was crucified a week before he. Raised from the dead. And as Jesus entered the holy city that day people were spreading their coats. As he entered on the Cole. And they cut branches from trees palm branches maybe and lay them down in front of them. And here he was nearing that completion the culmination of this long journey three years of ministry. He had here on Earth. And it all led to one place called gother. The Cross. And that’s why he came. He said to himself I have come to save that which was lost. Now was the time. This was the place to secure that salvation. In Palm Sunday marked the start which is often called the start of the Passion Week and the ministries all the things that happened the last week.
[00:02:33] Before. As we spoke of last week the last supper. His arrest his beating. His crucifixion. And as we celebrate next Sunday is Resler rection. Even as the multitudes.
[00:02:53] Cried out in joy. Laid palm branches cried Hosanna. They missed the true reason.
[00:03:01] For his presence. They can not see they cannot understand. The suffering Messiah. They are looking for a deliverer. That would deliver them from the oppression.
[00:03:16] Of the Romans. When Jesus came to deliver us. From the penalty. Of our sin. That’s why hoarding to Luke 19 starting in verse 41 it says as he’s speaking of Jesus drew near and saw the city. He wept over it.
[00:03:37] Saying would that you even you had known on this day the things that make for peace. But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you and your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and him you in on every side and tear you down to the ground. You and your children within you and they will not leave one stone upon another in you because you did not know the time of your visitation. The crowds were screaming out that Sunday Hosanna. And
[00:04:17] then later during the week the end of the week. The same crowd. Would be crying out.
[00:04:25] Crucify him. Oh how easily men and women are turned. It’s a tragic thing.
[00:04:36] To see. To me. The savior. Is not to recognize who he is but many a day.
[00:04:47] They don’t know who Jesus is out. They know the name of Jesus. But they don’t know. Jesus. Next Sunday. Many may go hide Easter eggs. They may have a large meal at home with the family. Some may even come to church in their new Easter outfits. But never once. Do they consider what Easter. What Resurrection Day. Is all about. They do not know Jesus. As their savior. And you may ask.
[00:05:37] Why do we need a Savior. Well I’m glad you asked that question.
[00:05:43] Because I’m going to tell you why we need a Savior. Or you go to Ephesians Chapter 2.
[00:05:55] Turn your Bibles to visions chapter two we’re going to start reading verse 1. We’re going to read through verse 10 for the context of the entire section here. Well we’re going to particularly look at the first five verses. Ephesians Chapter 2 Verse 1 begins and says. And you were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world according to the prince of the power of the air of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we to all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature. Children of wrath even as the rest. But God. Being rich in mercy. Because of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead in our transgressions made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved and raised up and he raised us up with him and see with us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. So that in the ages to come he might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus for by grace you have been saved through faith. And not and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God not as a result of works so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. So why do we need a Savior. Well let me tell you of our condition.
[00:08:07] There are three reasons here mentioned in Ephesians 2 the first three verses. Of why we need a savior. We need a Savior first of all according the verse one because we were dead in our trespasses and sins.
[00:08:26] And without a savior.
[00:08:28] All people are dead in sin and are incapable of any spiritual good. The Bible says that our hearts are desperately wicked. We do not have in any ability. To do good. To bring God glory that is. Secondly we need a savior according to verse. Q Because we are captive to an alien power without a savior.
[00:09:01] All people are captured it says here I am blinded by an evil supernatural person named Satan.
[00:09:12] And then thirdly we need a savior. According to verse 3 because we are by nature children of wrath.
[00:09:24] Without a savior.
[00:09:25] All people are under the wrath of God and are sentenced to eternal torment in hell. So therefore we are in desperate desperate need of a Savior. This is our condition. We need a savior because we are all dead in our sins and our trespasses. He says it twice. You are looking quite in verse one literally. He just says it out right. You were dead in your tracks fasces and sin and verse 5. Even when we were dead and our trespasses. So I mean if you if you were to ask many Christians that that know the word why sin is a problem why we need a Savior from it. They might say sin makes us guilty before God because they know they understand that our sin separates us from a holy God and they might say that that he brings us or our sin brings us under condemnation. And so we need a Savior who can forgive us and take away our punishment. And they would be absolutely right. But but this is not what the point here in region to is speaking of. This is not all that we need. Here is talks about the reason we need a savior isn’t just because we are in trouble with God and need to be forgiven. It says we need a savior here because we are in the more. Dead.
[00:11:11] Lifeless spiritually lifeless. We have no life. That means being that we are spiritually dead. We are incapable of generating any desire to do good.
[00:11:29] And we’ll be looking later. And Scripture says we don’t. Even we lack any desire even to seek. After God.
[00:11:40] When you’re in trouble you might say Well I’m I’m sorry. Or. If you’re in trouble you might make some resolutions you might do even desire to cast yourself on the mercy of God. But what can you do if you’re in the morgue. If you’re dead.
[00:12:01] What can you do about that. You can do nothing.
[00:12:07] Because you’re dead. I’m sure you understand what scripture is saying. Spiritually speaking you are wifeless dead. No ability to respond to respond to God spiritually dead. There is a phrase then in verse 3 It shows the seriousness of this deadness that at the end says that by nature by nature we are children of wrath of wrath even as the rest. In other words the things that we are done that deserve the wrath of God we do by nature. We need a savior not just because we have sinned but because by nature we are sinners and we sin.
[00:13:00] We have to sin because you see that is our nature to sin.
[00:13:04] By nature we are children of wrath deserving God’s wrath when every single person is born.
[00:13:12] We are born with a sin nature by nature we are sinners and as a result we sin.
[00:13:21] That’s why we need a savior at the end of verse 2. It says that we are sons of disobedience. Now this is another way of saying.
[00:13:32] That disobedience is ours is is in our spiritual genes rebellion runs in the human family. It’s part of our sinful nature so spiritually speaking. We are dead. I don’t know how many times I need to remind myself before I trusted in Christ.
[00:13:58] I was dead spiritually my spirit was dead. I did not seek after God. Scripture tells us unless God draws us. No one comes to God. Because of scriptures like this tells us we are dead.
[00:14:26] Spiritually. And by nature. We are children of wrath we deserve God’s wrath. And we have we have no choice when when we were born. Before we got saved and born again. We had no choice but to sin. Because our nature made us sinners without a savior. I had no spiritual inclinations at all. No spiritual life in me at all and therefore I needed a Savior not only to forgive me for my sin but also to give me spiritual life.
[00:15:11] So that my heart would incline to trust him and obey him.
[00:15:16] And this this is not the only verse that speaks to this topic. Romans 3. Verses 10 to 12 says. None is righteous. No not one.
[00:15:33] No one understands no one speaks for God. All have turned aside together they have become worthless. No one does good. No one in our sinful nature. No one does good not even while.
[00:15:57] Now. Does that mean that that all people that that we are not charitable. Know. Where. We’re spiritually speaking here.
[00:16:08] Where we’re sitting here talking about doing stuff for the glory of God and there is nothing that we do that is good. We can be charitable to one another bit but nothing that we do for the purpose of bringing glory to God.
[00:16:24] We cannot do good. We do not and cannot see God without a savior.
[00:16:31] We are ruled by sin. We have no inclination to seek God. None of our deeds are good according to the Scriptures. And then Romans 6 verse 17 and 18 it says with thanks be to God. That you. Who were once slaves to sin or slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed and having been set free from sin.
[00:17:06] You have become slaves of righteousness. So until the Savior came and set us free we were slaves of sin. We had no choice in.
[00:17:21] We are slaves to sin why our sin nature told us to do. We
[00:17:26] did we sin. And scripture tells us. That our wages the wages of sin the pay check for us sin is death eternal punishment in hell.
[00:17:47] Away from God. Now this is not.
[00:17:53] Some fire and brimstone preacher. Saying this. This is Jesus. This is the word of God as a matter of fact. Jesus spoke more of hell.
[00:18:08] Than anyone in the Bible.
[00:18:10] Why do you think so. Because he came to deliver us from our sin. He came to give us eternal life. He came to offered to us if we would believe in him alive. That would be blessed and eternal with God in the heavens. Scripture tells us he does not want any to perish.
[00:18:42] But see that’s our choice. Whether to believe. Or not to believe.
[00:18:53] But God. The next verse says. But God.
[00:18:59] Don’t you love it when God intervenes. He gives. Us. All these first three verses talking about our condition. Because you see. Until we understand our condition until. You go to the doctor. You know what would you think about Dr..
[00:19:23] Who. If you came in had all your blood tests and all that. And they got back the results and stuff. That. They would. Find out.
[00:19:39] That you had a week to live. But the doctor. Would be saying. Wow.
[00:19:50] This is really going to blow their day. If I tell them that they’re going to die in seven days.
[00:19:59] They might not like me anymore.
[00:20:02] I don’t think I’ll tell them what watch them leave here and have a good day and go out to lunch and go die in seven days but that’s OK. At least I’ll have seven days of peace. Right. Oh you think of that Dr.. No.
[00:20:23] No. Then let’s go a step further. Want if that Dr. knew that there was a vaccine. That if you would accept this vaccine. That he has for you.
[00:20:47] That it would save your life.
[00:20:51] But he doesn’t want to ruin your day to day. So I really and I can tell you’re going to die in seven days. But at the same time I’m not going to tell you that I have something that could save you. Figgis is doesn’t want people going to hell.
[00:21:11] So much so that he came that this is what we are cellaring this is what we’re remembering. This coming week that Jesus Christ. Went to the cross to take the wrath of God on himself.
[00:21:27] The wrath of God that we deserved because of our sin. He took our punishment so that if we would believe in Him as our Savior if we would believe that what he did at the cross of Calvary was to die in our place if we believe that and understand it then we have eternal life. And see we are like the doctor.
[00:21:58] We know. We we just read here in the first three verses what our condition is we are dead in our sins and trespasses as we are by nature children of wrath. And our sin is going to send us to hell. Because that’s a just punishment. And we know that.
[00:22:24] But you see we’re the ones that know the cure we know the remedy also. Don’t we. If we’re believers we do. Because we believe that. And can you believe.
[00:22:37] Think of this.
[00:22:40] There are some children of God who know all this and you keep it to yourself.
[00:22:46] There are people that we meet every single day. And we don’t know. Whether they’re Christian we don’t know.
[00:22:57] Whether they’re they’re going to go to hell or if they’re a believer in Christ they’re going to go to heaven. We don’t know that but we do know that they do not believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. We do know the certainty of their destination and we know the truth that can set them free.
[00:23:18] But what do we do.
[00:23:20] Oh I’m afraid if I tell them they might not like me.
[00:23:26] Oh I don’t want to ruin their day and tell them that without Christ you’re going to go to hell. Oh I don’t want to tell them. That God loves you so much. That he sent his only begotten Son. That whosoever believes in Him should not want what.
[00:23:49] Parish. I didn’t put that in the Bible. God did. Whoever believes in Him shall not perish.
[00:24:01] But have everlasting life and we keep that to ourselves. The god just told us our condition and now.
[00:24:15] He gives his remedy. But God The scripture says being rich in mercy.
[00:24:26] Because of his great love with which he loved us. Even when we were dead and our transgressions made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved and raised this up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
[00:24:50] So that in the ages to come he might show there are surpassing riches of His grace and kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. Look at look how God is described. Being rich.
[00:25:07] In mercy. Limitations 3 21 to 23 says.
[00:25:13] But I get this. I call to mind and therefore I have hope.
[00:25:18] This stead fast love of the Lord never ceases his mercies never come to an end. They never come to an end. They are new every morning.
[00:25:36] Great is Your faithfulness God’s mercies.
[00:25:40] They say they never come to an end. They are new every morning.
[00:25:45] Did you wake up this morning and say thank you God for your mercies that are new today. This is how.
[00:25:56] God is.
[00:25:58] Rich in mercy and then he says because of his great love with which he loved us.
[00:26:08] These are the motivation. See. See it’s all God it’s all his love.
[00:26:13] We did nothing we didn’t deserve mean Amigo’s goes on even when we are dead and our transgression we didn’t deserve anything.
[00:26:21] It’s all God it’s all because of his love because of his great love which he loved us.
[00:26:32] How many many many verses in the Bible how many many hymns in our hymnals that speak of the love of God. Second Thessalonians to 16. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. The God our father who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace.
[00:26:58] Revelations 1:5 And from Jesus Christ the faithful witness the firstborn of the dead and the ruler of kings on the earth. To him who loves us. And has freed us from our sins. By washed by his blood. That’s what we’re talking about on Friday.
[00:27:18] His crucifixion by his blood.
[00:27:21] And it says here even when we were dead in our transgressions he made us alive together with Christ.
[00:27:30] By grace you have been saved.
[00:27:33] We are told the same things in Romans 5:8 by God demonstrated shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
[00:27:46] It’s not when we try to clean ourselves up. It’s not when I’ll try to go to church three Sundays in a row. Maybe God will be more acceptable to God.
[00:27:59] Now you see we cannot become more acceptable to God. Nothing in us is acceptable. See that doesn’t matter because it’s all God is in it. It’s his life. We don’t have to be acceptable. We are not acceptable. We are dirty we are sinful we are rebels.
[00:28:21] And God says even in the midst of our being dead and our transgression even when we’re shaking our fists in his face. Kreiss.
[00:28:34] Died for us. We were dead in San but God. Made us alive with Bryce. We were captive to the prince of the power of the air. And we were enslaved to the course of this world.
[00:29:02] By God.
[00:29:05] Raise us up with Christ and made us sit with him in the heavenly places. We were children. Of Wrath. And deserving of an eternity in the torments of hell. But God. Instead of pouring out wrath. Will spend eternity showing you a major bowl riches. Of his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
[00:29:43] Brothers sisters. This is the good news.
[00:29:47] You know we are afraid to talk to people about Jesus. You know what the word gospel means.
[00:29:56] Good news. This is good news.
[00:30:00] Yes we people need to recognize see when they go to the doctor. They need to recognize their condition.
[00:30:08] Before they would take that vaccine or medicine don’t they. I mean you’ve got to give me a good reason to give me a shot. In fact you’ve got to give me for good reasons and give me a shot. OK.
[00:30:19] Kim 10 reasons. So so yes we need to share with people their condition. Because until they understand their condition spiritually.
[00:30:34] Their condition.
[00:30:36] They don’t understand that they need a Savior.
[00:30:40] I don’t need Jesus. Why do I need Jesus.
[00:30:47] We need to share with our out of compassion. And you know. Too many Christians share the gospel out of judgment. We should be broken hearted. Did you see the Scripture I read earlier where Jesus as he was entering Jerusalem. Because they did not recognize him. He wept. Over the city.
[00:31:18] When is the last time he wept. Over the last condition. Of a family member or a friend.
[00:31:29] Or somebody else. Jesus did.
[00:31:35] So. So we share. Out of compassion. The truth of their condition the truth of our condition before we became Christians. So it’s all about God’s love. I mean very familiar passages. John 3:16. And we should never be embarrassed. That’s kind of an old verse don’t use anymore. For God so loved the world. And he gave his only begotten Son. That whosoever believeth in Him should not want. Perry. But have everlasting. Eternal. Life. And first John. Chapter 4. Verses 9 to 10 it says in this the love of God was made manifest among us. That God sent His only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love. Not that we have loved God but that.
[00:32:40] He loved us and sent His Son to be the appropriate creation for our sins. We know before the creation of the world. In God’s eternal plan. He chose to love us.
[00:32:54] And to send his Son to die in our place for those who believe in him. So you see all of our sins were paid for. At the cross of Calvary. Behold I am the one. That is in Christ.
[00:33:11] He is a new creature. But those are the ones who have believed on. The Lord Jesus Christ. And all of our sins.
[00:33:22] Regardless of what they are. We godless of how numerous they are. Jesus took care of them. At the cross of Calvary. And that’s what this week is so special. I hope that. You. Don’t take the word of God and. Find the places your favorite. Gospel. And read of this last week of Jesus’s ministry. Come Tuesday night. As we look at how those the Jews do not realize it. But how the Passover the sacrifice they made and. Ultimately was fulfilled. By the Lamb of God once and for all. For all sins. For those who believe in him. So is pray. Lord
[00:34:25] God. We. Words cannot express. How grateful we should be. Or are. Because your act of love was so great. It
[00:34:40] cannot be measured. It cannot be explained. We cannot be thankful enough the Lord we do thank you. Lord I pray. That
[00:34:54] as we meet those in the world and need to know need to hear the gospel of Christ. Don’t let us be ashamed to tell us that if we are ashamed of form I am that.
[00:35:10] You’ll be ashamed before you. So Lord.
[00:35:14] I pray give us the opportunities this week. Let us recognize those our opportunities. So that we might share even invite those who have not heard the gospel to come with us. To come next Sunday to hear the Gospel so that they might. Be drawn by you and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and like us we are a new creature and have eternal life.
[00:35:41] And we pray this in Jesus name Amen.
