Lessons Learned from the Last Supper
[00:00:00] This I’ll put up with a word of prayer first. Lord as we come in and we approach this Easter season and.
[00:00:10] Jesus was winding down his ministry those last weeks. And then. The very night. That he instituted the Lord’s Supper that we will be partaking in later. That night he would be crucified and. As a result we’d have. The
[00:00:32] opportunity of eternal life. So what I pray. As we look at the lessons learned from from that last supper that you just opened us up our hearts and our minds your word in and penetrate it with your truth and we pray this in Jesus name Amen.
[00:00:53] We grow up all of our lives. Learning lessons are easy to learn and some are not quite as easy and then then some people just won’t learn their lesson.
[00:01:14] Two pals were sitting at a pub one evening watching the 11 o’clock news and a report comes on about a man threatening to jump from the 20th store floor of a downtown building and one friend turns the other and says I bet you ten bucks.
[00:01:35] That guy doesn’t jump and his buddy agrees and says I’ll take that bet.
[00:01:41] In a few minutes later the man on the ledge jumps in so the loser hands his power a ten dollar bill he says and it says you know I can’t take your money.
[00:01:53] Says I saw him jump earlier on the 6 o’clock news and his buddy said Well me too but I didn’t think he would do it again.
[00:02:07] You know it’s for some of it’s just very hard to learn lessons and lessons in life. This morning I want to look at the lessons that we might learn.
[00:02:20] From the last supper. So let’s start in Mark chapter 14.
[00:02:28] Verses 12 16 Mark 14 12 to 16 it says I’m on the first day of unleavened bread when they had sacrificed the Passover Lamb His disciples said to him Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover. And he sent two of his disciples and said to them Go into the city.
[00:02:58] And a man carrying a jar of water will meet you and follow him and wherever he enters.
[00:03:04] Say to the master of that house the teacher says Where’s my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples and He will show you a large upper room furnished and ready they’re prepared for us and the disciples sent out or set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them and they prepared the Passover. But let me ask you a question if you were to find out for whatever reason that you had one day to live.
[00:03:44] One day 24 hours whom would you gather around yourself. And what would you say to them. Because this is where Jesus was at.
[00:04:04] He knew what was going to happen that night. One of his own disciples.
[00:04:10] Would betray him. He would be arrested in the garden. Taken before pilot in typhus and others. And tried and found guilty. And crucified. And he knew it was coming. Matter of fact he told his disciples.
[00:04:33] What was about to happen. So I would think knowing that this is the last time that he would intimately be with his disciples. That what he chose to teach them was he chose to share with them probably was pretty important matter of fact I would say that it was very important.
[00:05:03] Because this is the last that they would hear from him personally. And so with the Passover upon them knowing what was going to happen that night he set out and this is what he did during those last hours.
[00:05:21] With his disciples and I believe we can find at least four lessons learned from that last supper a new priority. A new commandment a new residence and a new covenant. So lesson number one. A new priority.
[00:05:48] Being a servant.
[00:05:50] Now there is this distinction among the disciples earlier during Jesus’s ministry in Galilee. Scripture tells us and it says that an argument arose among his disciples as to which of them. Was the greatest.
[00:06:10] And we mark records in Mark 9 starting in verse 33 he says and they came to Capernaum. This is after this dispute arose when they are arguing and when they are in the house he is speaking of Jesus asked them.
[00:06:28] What were you discussing on the way here.
[00:06:33] Oh wow. Who told him.
[00:06:37] What were you discussing on the way here.
[00:06:40] But they kept silent for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. And he sat down and he called the twelve and he said to them if anyone would be first. He must be the last of all.
[00:06:59] Servant of all.
[00:07:00] So Jesus had already rebuked them. Here in this ministry in Galilee because they are arguing among themselves that they were the greatest. Jesus knowing our hearts Scripture tells us took a child.
[00:07:18] And set them there beside himself and in Matthew 18 started anniversary this so what he said. Truly I say to you unless you turn and become like children.
[00:07:32] You will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.
[00:07:49] So. So he was telling them that that the place of greatness is from the place of being a servant.
[00:08:01] To Humble yourselves a person who humbles themselves and be and is the least the servant of all they will be the greatest in the kingdom. So here we have were at the Passover. What we call. The last supper.
[00:08:24] After having already rebuked his disciples earlier and telling them that whoever wants to be great in the kingdom needs to be the least. Now. According to Luke there is a nother dispute between the disciples the very night of the last supper.
[00:08:47] About who will be the greatest in his kingdom. We find the account recorded in the Gospel of Luke in. Verse or chapter 22 starting in verse 24.
[00:09:02] And it says a dispute also arose among them as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest here this night. I mean they are still arguing and he said to them the keys of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and those in authority over them. Are called benefactors but not so with you. Rather let the greatest among you become as the younger’s and the leader as one who serves for who is the greater one who reclines at the table or one who serves.
[00:09:50] Is it not the one who reclines at the table but I am among you as one who serves you are those who have stayed with me in my trials and I signed to you as my father assigned to me a kingdom that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on the throne judging the 12 tribes of Israel.
[00:10:12] So he says right here I am among you as one who serves. Now.
[00:10:21] According to what Jesus did next he provided a very vivid illustration of what he meant here. Now it seems as if when everybody came to this upper room for the Passover meal that there must not have been some servant.
[00:10:43] There to wash her feet because that was customary in that time that the master of the House would have their servant. That when when the guests would arrive at the house that there would be a servant there at the door and because of their sandals in the dusty road they would come into the master’s house with their feet all day and they would wash the guests feet. Well it doesn’t seem as if and probably.
[00:11:15] Because of this argument you know while I am greater than you. I was there at the Mount.
[00:11:24] When he transfigured himself.
[00:11:25] It was me and John you know I was there you weren’t. Well I’m the one that found the kid with the fish and the bread.
[00:11:34] And he fed all those thousands of people you didn’t go out looking for anyone with food. Well I see this and I am and you think someone who is in the midst of arguing. On who of them is the greatest Do you think that one of them in the midst of this argument would literally. Get down and wash.
[00:12:00] Another disciple’s feet that they had just been arguing with. And who’s the greatest. Not in this world that wouldn’t happen.
[00:12:11] I’m not washing his feet. He thinks he’s better than me. And so it seems as if. No one’s feet was washed. So as Jesus is again confronts his disciples about their pride in arguing them monks themselves who is a great See. You know who the greatest is. The least.
[00:12:43] The greatest in my kingdom will be the one who serves because that’s what I have come to do.
[00:12:48] And then this is what Jesus does it’s found in the Gospel of John Chapter 13 and starting with what it says now before the feast of the Passover when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world.
[00:13:04] As a father having loved His own who were in the world he loved them to the end. And during supper when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot Simon’s son to betray him. Jesus knowing that the father had given all things into his hand and that he had come from the father and was going back to God rose from supper.
[00:13:27] He laid aside his outer garments and taken a towel he tied around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples feet. And then wipe them with a towel that was wrapped around him and then he came to Simon Peter who said Lord do not wash my feet. And Jesus answered and said what I am doing you do not understand now. But afterwards you will understand. And Peter said to him You shall never wash my feet. And Jesus answered and said if I do not wash you you have.
[00:14:10] No Share with me. And Simon Peter said to him Lord not my feet only but also my hands and my head. And Jesus said to him the one who has bathed does not need to wash except for his feet but is completely clean. And you are clean but not everyone of you for he knew who was to be created and that’s why he said not all of you are clean and when he had washed their feet.
[00:14:39] And put on his outer garments and resumed his place he said to them Do you understand what I have done to you. Now.
[00:14:52] I could picture the disciples. We can be like. What.
[00:14:58] He asked. Do you understand what I have done to you.
[00:15:03] What did he do. What did he do. John. Was he talking about. He set out an example. An example. Not only for his disciples who were there. But to us.
[00:15:24] Who read what is recorded in John’s gospel. Jesus. God in the flesh.
[00:15:34] Who deserves all worship and glory. Got down on his knees. And washed.
[00:15:46] The feet of those who had just been arguing. About who’s the greatest. And the master.
[00:15:54] The Rabbi. Jesus write down.
[00:16:03] And watch their feet you understand what I’ve just done. He says. And Jesus went on to explain story in verse.
[00:16:19] 13. He says.
[00:16:23] You call me teacher and Lord. Which means master.
[00:16:28] And you are right for so I am if then your Lord and teacher has washed your feet. You also ought to wash.
[00:16:42] One another’s feet. I have given you an example. And you should do just as I have done to you. Truly. Truly. I say to you.
[00:16:57] A servant is not greater than his master. Nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know the St. blessid are you. If you do then the. Because you see God. Came down here to this filthy corrupt sinful world. And according to Romans 5:8 says he demonstrated his love towards us in that while we were yet sinners.
[00:17:33] Christ died for us. New priority. Being a servant.
[00:17:41] The second lesson we might learn from the last supper is a new commandment. John 13 34 and 35 it goes on and says A new commandment I give to you. That you love one another.
[00:17:59] Just as I have loved you. You also love one another by this all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love one.
[00:18:15] For another. A new commandment I give to you in the very same way.
[00:18:24] To the extent in the manner that I have loved you. You need to be loving one another because by this this unconditional love this and and the word here for love is a god pay.
[00:18:39] With this guy. They love this unconditional love. You have to love one another. And by this demonstration of love that the world will know that you are my followers. See I guess that must be must have been rare back then for people to love one another. Because he says it’s this very fact of you loving each other that’s going to set you apart from all the other people and when they see you loving one another they’re going to know who you are a follower of you or one of my disciples. Because of this because of the love.
[00:19:25] You have for one another wow.
[00:19:30] Is that what the world sees today. When they look at a Christian or do they see this harmony this unity back biting gossip filthy language jokes.
[00:19:46] We still from our employers just like the other people at work.
[00:19:52] They see that in the world.
[00:19:55] Is there any difference between the world and the believers. There certainly should be a great difference.
[00:20:03] We should shine as we talked on a number which you know we we are the light of the world the salt of the earth. And people should be able to tell that by the way we live.
[00:20:16] And respond to life.
[00:20:20] The fruit of our lives should be love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness self-control. We should display Why what is spoken of in Ephesians 4 31 32 says Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you.
[00:20:47] Along with all malice. Be kind to one another tenderhearted. Forgiving one another as God in Christ.
[00:20:59] Has forgiven you.
[00:21:02] These should be the earmarks even as we have been preaching through the Sermon on the Mount the Beatitudes remember.
[00:21:08] These are characteristics of a believer a true believer and this is what the world should see in us when we’re out there if there’s a waitress having a hard day not exactly has the attitude you would expect and want of someone waiting on you.
[00:21:32] If there’s anybody in that entire restaurant they should be treating her well and trying to encourage her. It should be a follower of Jesus Christ.
[00:21:48] Lesson number two a new commandment. We go. And see. Lesson number 3. A new residence in John 14. Verses 1 to 4.
[00:22:03] Jesus said Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me for me in my father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so I would have told you.
[00:22:21] That I go to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and will take you to myself and that where I am you may be also.
[00:22:37] And you know the way to where I am going. Right now.
[00:22:44] Jesus is in heaven preparing a dwelling place for his children.
[00:22:53] The body talks or the body. The scripture talks about being absent from the body.
[00:22:59] Being present with the Lord.
[00:23:02] But there is going to be a day. No one knows when.
[00:23:07] That Jesus is going to come just as he spoke. He speaks of here. He is going to come. Into the clouds first Corinthians 15 first less lonely and so forth because you get to come to the clouds and is in a catch up. Every believer. From the Earth. To meet him in the clouds.
[00:23:29] And it says and there we will be with the Lord forever. So. Jesus right here.
[00:23:39] At the last supper is talking about this new residence that the place I’m getting ready to go.
[00:23:45] You will be there because I’m going to come and I’m going to get you if we don’t die first there’ll be a day I’m going to come and get you to draw you to myself and you’re going to have a new residence. And then the last. Lesson we see here. Is a new covenant He instituted.
[00:24:13] What we call the Lord’s Supper.
[00:24:16] 22 starting in verse 15 says and he said to them I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer for I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
[00:24:31] And he took a cup when he had given thanks he said Take this and divided among yourselves.
[00:24:37] I tell you that from now on I will not drink the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. And he took bread and when he had given things he broke it and gave it to them saying this is my body which is given for you do this.
[00:24:53] In remembrance of me. And likewise the cup after they had eaten the same this cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant. In my blood. So so he speaks of this new covenant.
[00:25:10] He says that this is my body this that the bread represented his body in this metaphorical language.
[00:25:18] It’s typical Hebrew ism and there’s no miracle of transubstantiation here is it being implied his his body the bread does not literally turn into the body of Christ today.
[00:25:34] The cup does this this does not turn into the physical blood of Jesus Christ that this represents his body and his blood.
[00:25:46] And then the disciples that might have mis understood mistaken what he is talking about.
[00:25:53] This symbolic Tim he is right there about this bite is broken for you his body was not broken. He had not gone to the cross has not been scourge. He is right there. So it symbolizes what he implied here.
[00:26:11] And he said do this in remembrance of me and end there. And we’re going to be talking.
[00:26:18] Tuesday night April 11. Here we’re going to have Jews for Jesus. Here and they’re going to talk about Christ and the Passover and how Christ foreshadow or Passover I mean foreshadowed what Jesus was going to come here and do it look forward to the sacrifice of Christ. He transformed the Seder meal all together into a different ceremony which looks back in remembrance of his atoning death.
[00:26:51] Transfer. He transformed the last Passover that he took into this the first observance. Of the Lord’s Supper.
[00:27:01] His statement. This is my body. Could not possibly have been taken in any literal sense by the disciples there. And he talks about this new this new covenant in my blood.
[00:27:17] Covenant. They were ratified. By the blood of a sacrifice. That’s how the covenant was ratified. And this he’s speaking out was the blood of the New Covenant. It’s not an animal’s blood.
[00:27:33] But Christ’s own blood that was shed for the remission of sin. We’re told in Hebrews and I love reading something where you read through Hebrews and it’s like wow this is kind of hard to get through but man if you take the time to slowly read the book of Hebrews it has such depth in it. In Hebrews 9 24 to 28 it says for Christ has entered not into the holy place and made with hands.
[00:28:03] Which are copies of the truth thing but into heaven itself now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
[00:28:12] Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly as you know they every year was repeating the sacrifice. Now Or was it to offer himself repeatedly as a high priest enters a holy places every year.
[00:28:26] With blood not his own. For then.
[00:28:31] He would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world but as it is he has appeared once for all. At the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
[00:28:48] And just as it is appointed for man to die once and after that comes judgment. So Christ. Having been offered once. To bear the sins of many. Will appear a second time. Not to deal with sin. But to save those who are eagerly awaiting for him.
[00:29:11] In Hebrews Chapter 10 says.
[00:29:14] So in verse 11 and every priest stands daily at his service offering repeatedly the same sacrifices which can never take away sin. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sin. He sat down at the right hand of God. Waiting for that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For. By a single offering.
[00:29:40] He has perfected for all time. Those who were being sacrificed so see. As we’re getting ready to partake of.
[00:29:50] The Lord’s Supper downstairs. This is what we’re talking about. This is what we are to remember.
[00:29:59] Jesus Christ shed his blood for the remission of sin.
[00:30:02] He Jesus was the ransom payment. So we might have eternal life. And that should be our message. Here.
[00:30:15] Today as we approach Easter. Now.
