Jesus’ Remedy for Anxiety

[00:00:00] Let’s Pray. What I do pray for Brother Bill Blake. I know that he desires so greatly to be here with all of us to worship you to encourage me to share the love of Christ wherever he is. And I know that recently he’s been we can. So Lord I just pray you’d put your healing hand on him today especially today being this Father’s Day special day that that he is honored. And Lord I pray for those families here those those people who fathers have passed away and were not able to be here in the flesh to honor them.

[00:00:55] And there was a hole in our hearts and a love that goes on.

[00:00:58] Loved by our fathers because they’re not here. But Lord I thank you for the memories that we have. I thank you for the part that they played in our lives of making us who we are today. So long as we live in your word as Jesus is on the Mount sharing with the people sitting there things are the kingdom and what should be important to us. And as we look at anxiety and how he tells us that we should not be anxious. I pray that this this time of turmoil and stress in this world that we might remember and look to Jesus in his words and to you as our Father who is in control. A loving father and we pray this in Jesus name Amen.

[00:01:56] The story is told of a woman who dreamed of traveling to England. And riding a train through the English countryside. And one day her dream came true. She flew from the United States to London and she boarded her train. But however after a short time on her train trip she began fretting in being worried anxious about the windows. The temperature in the train. She complained about her seat assignment. She rearranged her luggage. And so on and to her shock she suddenly reached her journey’s end. And with deep regret she told the person who was there to pick her up.

[00:02:56] That if I had known I was going to arrive so soon I wouldn’t have wasted my time fretting so much.

[00:03:06] But you know that’s the story. Of many of us today. We waste our time worrying about everything worrying about little things.

[00:03:19] We get to the end of our lives and we look back we realize that we spent so much time agonizing fretting worried over so many things complaining about this and that.

[00:03:34] Yet life. Passes by so quickly. So this morning on the Sermon on the mountain we are at the place where Jesus shared with us that we are not to be anxious.

[00:03:49] He talks about anxiety and if you like to turn to Matthew chapter 6 with me I’m going to start reading in verse 25 and Jesus says.

[00:04:02] Therefore I tell you Do not be anxious about your life. What you will eat or what you will drink. Nor about your body what you will put on is not life more than food and the body more than clothing. Look at the birds of the air. They neither slow nor reap nor gather into barns and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. And are you not more valuable than they. And which you view by being anxious can and a single hour. To his span of life. And why are you anxious about clothing. Consider the lilies of the field how they grow they neither toil nor spin. Can I tell you even Solomon in all of his glory was not a raid like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field which today is alive and tomorrow was thrown into the oven will he not much more close you. Oh you of little faith. Therefore do not be anxious saying what shall we eat or what shall we drink or what shall we wear for the Gentiles seek after these things and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

[00:05:15] But see first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

[00:05:33] So five times here in ten verses. Jesus uses the word anxious and the word means is to have an anxious concern. Apprehension or even fear about possible danger or misfortune and especially of the future. Someone has defined worry as the interest we pay in advance today for a trouble that may never come tomorrow. A survey was taken and there is such a high percentage like 90 percent of things that we worry about. In the future never even occur. Yet the worry the anxiety we have now only affects our spirit but it affects our body. It’s God that gave his life gave us gave each of us our lives and he told his disciples Surely if God gave us life we can trust God for all the lesser things as well. In essence to worry to be anxious is to be distrustful of God. The problem with worrying about the future is simply this. When were were worried. We are acting as if God does not exist. Or if God exists he doesn’t care. Or if God exists he does not have the power to change things that I am worried about. So so in essence it really is. It’s being distrustful not trusting God. What we’re really saying is this.

[00:07:27] I don’t really believe that God can do what he says he will do and I don’t really believe that God will be with me and take care of me in any trouble.

[00:07:38] That’s the basis of worry. And. Fear. And many of the worries many of the things that we fear. Is about the future.

[00:07:50] We worry that we will be left alone. In the future. We will not know what to do when the future gets here. We worry that we won’t have what we need in the future. We worry that we will be hurt by someone or something in the future. We worry that we may not even make it to the future.

[00:08:13] There are many things many people.

[00:08:16] In the Old Testament that had calls from a human perspective had cause to be worried to be to be fearful. Remember the account of the three men who were thrown into the fiery furnace. Nebuchadnezzar made a command. He

[00:08:32] had built this big statue in gold. He made a command that at the sound of the music the harp and the wires and trumpets and all that the sound of the music. Everyone was to fall down and worship this image that he had created.

[00:08:48] And so when the music started all fell down in worship except for three young Jewish captives.

[00:08:56] When Nebuchadnezzar heard that they refuse to to kneel and to worship this image he had created. He became furious. With into a furious rage and commanded that these three that they be brought to him.

[00:09:12] And this is what Nebuchadnezzar said to them he said.

[00:09:15] Is it true. Shadrach Meshach and Abednego. That you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up. Now if you’re ready when you hear the sound of the horn pipelined cry and harp bagpipes and every kind of music. If you are ready to fall down and worship the image that I have made while it’s well and good. But if you do not worship. I shall immediately.

[00:09:46] You shall immediately be cast in to the fiery furnace. Now listen.

[00:09:54] The next thing never does or says he says and who is the God who will deliver you out of my hands.

[00:10:03] Who is the God that will deliver you out of my hands. As if he was the ultimate say what was going to happen now.

[00:10:12] Do you think that these three young men had cause to worry to be fearful.

[00:10:23] I mean I don’t know what I would do. I could be shaking at the knees I don’t. What would you do. I mean they certainly had cause to be fearful. You have. Pharaoh the one who is set up as God. That because you know the true God you refused to worship him.

[00:10:49] Listen to what the young men said to him. Shadrach Meshach and Abednego. Answered and said to the king oh Nebuchadnezzar. We have no need to answer you in this manner.

[00:11:05] If this be so our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and he will deliver us out of your hand.

[00:11:16] But if not.

[00:11:19] Be it known to you hoping that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.

[00:11:32] I mean if Nebuchadnezzar was mad at the beginning just think what he is now. Is says he was filled with fury and the expression on his face was changed. I don’t even know what that means but I mean he was in a rage against Shadrack me shaking me and he ordered the furnace heated seven times more than was usually his back. You see here in the Scriptures that the men who were commissioned to throw him into the fiery furnace they die.

[00:12:06] In taking them to the fiery furnace and cast in them because the furnace was so hot and then it goes on.

[00:12:15] And it says Dinkytown in verse 24. King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished. They were thrown in. He was astonished and rose up in haste and he declared to his counsellors did we not cast three men into the fire.

[00:12:31] The answer said true okaying. He answered and said But I see four men unbound walking in the midst of fire and they are not hurt. And the appearance of the fourth is like a sign of the gods.

[00:12:46] Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace and declared Shadrach FAQ of Bendigo servants of the most high God.

[00:12:56] Come now come come on out here.

[00:12:59] And then Shadd racked me facon Bendigo came out from the fire and they say Crafton the perfects in the governors and the king’s councillors gathered together and they saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men. They’re here and they hid the hair on their heads were not singed and their cloaks were not harmed and no smell of fire had come upon them.

[00:13:27] If there is any anxiety on the part of these three men it certainly did not show up and how they responded to Nebuchadnezzar. Let me repeat this what they said if it be so.

[00:13:42] Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the fiery furnace and he will deliver us out of your hand.

[00:13:52] OK Nebuchadnezzar but if not be it known to you OK’ing that we will not serve your guys or worse.

[00:14:03] The golden image that you set up see where it when we are in a right relationship with God.

[00:14:10] When we truly understand that God is in sovern control the omnipotent all powerful God the God that made and created everything you see and everything you see.

[00:14:27] The creator of the universe is our Father.

[00:14:32] Our Father God the Almighty God when we understand that he is in control of the mind and little details of our life.

[00:14:42] Want is to worry about.

[00:14:45] He is able if that be so he is able to deliver us out of anything that we are worried about.

[00:14:55] He is able to provide everything that we need for the future.

[00:15:02] Why dont we trust him.

[00:15:05] These three men they found their strength and faith in a powerful and faithful God would look at what Isaiah 41 says. In verse 10. Fear not for I am with you. Be not dismayed for I am your God I will strengthen you. I will help you and I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. For I the LORD your God hold your right hand.

[00:15:39] I your god. Have you ever walked through. A ball and seen little kids holding on to their parents hands walking through you. Some have to clean them because their kids are so small you know.

[00:15:55] God says listen if. I.

[00:15:59] Have your right I hold your right hand. He’s that close. It is I who say to you fear not I in the moat. I am the one who helped you.

[00:16:14] We have nothing to fear.

[00:16:17] Fear not you worm Jacob. You men of Israel. I am the one who helps you declares the LORD your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.

[00:16:28] God’s holding in our hands. Why should we be afraid. Whom shall we be afraid of. It’s like Jesus says here we worry about what we will eat what we drink what we will put on he says you shouldn’t be worried about these. He uses an example look at the birds in the air.

[00:16:50] They need their soul or so nor read nor gather in barns and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more valuable than they. And. What

[00:17:06] does worrying do for us.

[00:17:13] Give me one good thing worrying does for us it can’t change a thing. If

[00:17:19] it’s going to happen if God wills it to happen it will happen.

[00:17:24] He’s in control see anxiety worry.

[00:17:30] It’s a thought process. See it’s how we view it. What we might call worldview is how we view God.

[00:17:40] How do you view God is the Almighty God.

[00:17:44] Does he care. Do you see him holding your hand.

[00:17:50] Because if you do.

[00:17:54] Then you don’t have anything to worry about. And all.

[00:18:01] Jesus says. And which of you what do you hear.

[00:18:07] By being an atheist can add a single hour to the span of your life.

[00:18:14] Anxiety.

[00:18:18] Is a thought process. What what are you thinking. See we let these thoughts parade through our minds and part of it.

[00:18:30] Is the world. Part of it is the enemy. So they. God doesn’t care. Look. This and this and this is happening.

[00:18:41] Wow. You’re going to be broke. Wow. Your kids your grandkids your loved ones are going to be hurt. Wow wow wow. And get you worried and anxious as if there is no God who is in control. What’s your Biblical fact. Let me tell you what Paul. Biblical perspective was his world view. Philippians 3 it says whatever gain I had I count as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed I count everything is lost. Because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish in order that I may gain Christ. And be found in him not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law but that which comes through faith in Christ the righteousness from God that depends on faith.

[00:19:43] That I may know him and the power of His resurrection and may share his sufferings. Becoming like him in his death and then we see in Romans.

[00:19:54] Romans 8. 18 says for I consider I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to you. The stuff that we are going through here Paul said you can’t even compare that to the glory just waiting for us.

[00:20:19] So will you give me three ways.

[00:20:23] Three ways to conquering is I-T. Remember how God has performed in the past. Realize what God has promised in the present. And read and rely on what God has planned for the future. So first. Remember how God has pre-formed in the past. One of the greatest Leck ringleaders we see in the Bible was that of Moses. Now Moses had a habit he liked China sitting. The children of Israel down from time to time. And reminding them of what God had done for them in the past as he was preparing or trying to prepare them to go into the Promised Land.

[00:21:11] He made this statement in Deuteronomy one verse 30 the Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes just as he just got done doing and in the wilderness where you have seen how the Lord God has carried you as a man carries a son all the way. That you went until you came to this place. So so so Moses say no he’s kind of going up and down memory lane here trying to remind them what God had done for them. Do they remember the parting of the sea.

[00:21:52] Do they remember the pillar of fire or did they remember how God destroyed the Egyptian army.

[00:21:57] No they were complaining remember the account they were murmuring Oh the garlic and despite all this that we left behind.

[00:22:07] We always laugh at this madness stop and complain and murmur murmur that God was providing for them.

[00:22:19] And Moses said.

[00:22:22] It’s like they’re saying God I don’t even care for us.

[00:22:26] And he says I. Don’t remember how he delivered us from them. Remember the party of the Red Sea.

[00:22:33] Remember how they all all the water came in on the Egyptian army destroyer remembers a pillar of fire. The words that were following that day in the pillar or at night in the pillar cloud during the day.

[00:22:46] Do you remember even even then in the world. There are millions.

[00:22:52] Of people going through the wilderness on the way to the promised land and God was feeding them every day they would wake up in the morning. Here is this man. It was like bread they didn’t have to cook it. And they never complained. He got no meat.

[00:23:11] So he gave them quail field coming out their nose so he fed them and they were thirsty. And so God.

[00:23:22] Told Moses will always speak to this rock modals over spoke to ramp.

[00:23:30] Streams of water. Came out giving them drink. So here in the very midst of this murmuring God was providing. Providing for them daily. Providing for them every day and see the end of the whole point. That Moses was making here was do you see. How God has reformed and taking care of you in the past. Don’t you think that the God who is taking care of you in the past.

[00:24:01] Can take care of your present and take care of your future God something amazing to the nation of Israel through the prophet Isaiah Isaiah 46. He said Listen to me Go house of Jacob. All the remnant of the house of Israel who have been born by me from before your birth.

[00:24:27] Carried from the womb.

[00:24:30] So. O house of Jacob all the remnant.

[00:24:35] Who he he God bore. From the very birth and carried them in their womb and from the moment you were conceived in your mother’s womb.

[00:24:46] God knew you. God was taking care of you here even when he didn’t know God was there.

[00:24:54] God is watching us and then listen while he says and Isaiah 46 for he says even to your old age I will be the same. And even to your Grainne years I will bear you. I have done it and I will carry you and I will bear you and I will deliver you so see. Your life is like a book ends here. From the moment you were conceived to the moment you die.

[00:25:20] God was there. God is there. God will always be there and he will always take care of you so why should you worry.

[00:25:30] Jesus says Secondly second point in concrete anxiety.

[00:25:38] Is realized what God has promised you here in the present beginning in verse 25 here.

[00:25:46] Jesus repeats this three times. He says therefore do not be anxious is the command. Don’t worry. Do not be anxious. Don’t be fearful. And when he’s talking about being anxious he’s talking about really about tomorrow. Don’t be scared about tomorrow if you think about it. Worry is almost always about tomorrow or something in the future. Maybe tonight tomorrow something in future he goes on the anniversary forces. Each day has its own trouble or trouble of its own. Another word you’ve got today which is the only day you have we don’t know how we’re going to have tomorrow. Ask yourself this quiz. Ask yourself this question. How how can I depend upon God today for the things that God wants to give me. Because tomorrow we don’t worry about tomorrow. It has its own problem. We have not we have enough problems today. So in this way you realize what God God what He has promised you he has promised you for today because today God says and psalm 32 I will instruct you I will teach you in the way you should go I will counsel you with my eye upon you and then in another verse and Deuteronomy 31 says it is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you he will not leave your forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. So when you put these two promises together that this what we’re saying God saying today I will guide you. Today I will I will guard you.

[00:27:30] Today I will go with you and today I will give you what you need to face any trouble. And then thirdly to conquer anxiety. We need to rely on what God has planned for the future. Listen to verse 30 for one more time. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow for tomorrow will be anxious for it’s self sufficient for the day is its own from when all the Amplified Bible translates it this way so do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own sufficient for each day is its own trouble.

[00:28:18] God says I will give you grace. He says his grace is sufficient for today to meet any need that we have today.

[00:28:29] God’s grace is sufficient to take us through it. He then tells us that His grace is sufficient.

[00:28:37] To take us through what we’re worrying about because we may not even be going through it. Most of the things we worry about we’re not going to go through. That’s not what God gives us grace for he gives us grace sufficient for today.

[00:28:51] Now sometimes and I’m not saying this is a good liberation but I kind of think. Myself of grace is being kind like I have a grace thanks. You know kind of like you have a fuel tank and he fills it up. With sufficient fill with a sufficient grace for today. Right because he says his Grace’s face is sufficient today. And it’s almost in this wife say’s almost.

[00:29:23] It’s almost as if that by worrying and being fearful about tomorrow the next day and next week next year it’s almost as if we’re using up God’s grace.

[00:29:34] The game is for today for worrying about tomorrow.

[00:29:39] And that may be a bad example but in a sense when we spend all of our time worrying and fretting and being anxious about something that very likely will not even happen and if it dies.

[00:29:54] God will give us grace sufficient to go through it.

[00:30:00] Jesus says don’t worry. About tomorrow.

[00:30:07] If you’re a child of God if you’re a follower of Jesus Christ I can tell you something about your feet.

[00:30:13] Matter of fact I can guarantee it because it’s in scriptures found in Romans 8 28 it says and we know that for those who love God.

[00:30:24] All things work together for good. For those who are called according to his purpose doesn’t say all things are good. Doesn’t say that we’re going to like it does. Matter of fact does not say is going to be easy going through. But what God says is that all things work together for good. The puzzle pieces that we talk about remember the little pieces of the puzzle I feel. Last night I was looking at them. I saw him my little flower that there has dried up and died to remind me that if I’m not into God’s word. Devotionally that that’s what’s going to happen to him my spirit. But I had a little puzzle piece to remind me that all I see.

[00:31:17] Are little pieces. Of the puzzle.

[00:31:22] And I try to make sense. Of this little piece. And I can’t make sense of a little piece of puzzle because I don’t know the big picture.

[00:31:35] But God does. And God knows this is just like we put together a puzzle.

[00:31:41] He knows each piece is set in his right place.

[00:31:46] Because he is the one that made the puzzle.

[00:31:53] And for his glory and for our good whether we understand or not all things work together.

[00:32:01] For good.

[00:32:07] Now don’t get the impression that I’ve told all of you.

[00:32:14] Not to worry. Because Or maybe some here sitting today. They have never trusted Jesus Christ as their savior. And there are two things that you should be worried about.

[00:32:33] There is a future that you’d better fear you’d better be worried about death.

[00:32:42] You’d better be worried about judgment you better fear a future without God. Because that’s what Scripture tells us. If we have not trusted Jesus Christ as our Savior.

[00:32:55] In Hebrews we’re told and just as and just as it is appointed for man to die once. And after that comes judgment. But you see.

[00:33:08] This is the beauty of the cross. Of Jesus Christ.

[00:33:14] This is the beauty and the powerful message of the gospel.

[00:33:20] And that is yes there is a day of reckoning there is a day of judgment.

[00:33:25] Does separate us from a holy God. And we are told in scripture that the wages of sin is death.

[00:33:36] But in the Gospel we are told that Jesus Christ. Came to earth to seek and to save that was was lost. As the sinless Son of God. He went to the cross. And he died in our place.

[00:33:56] He took the punishment that you and I deserve because of our sin. He was buried.

[00:34:05] He was raised again from the dead. To take away the only fear that we should have. That is the fear of dying. Without

[00:34:13] God. Because

[00:34:15] if we’ve accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior if we really understand. That we are sinners in need of a Savior we have no fear.

[00:34:26] Of the future. Because we know by the promises in God’s word we know because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

[00:34:35] We know where we will spend eternity.

[00:34:40] So if you’ve never had that opportunity if you’ve never trusted. In Christ as your savior. Come

[00:34:50] talk to me talk to one of the elders deacons. We can take you to the Bible and show you what you need to understand and to believe to have eternal life.

[00:35:03] You know I don’t know what the future holds. But I know who holds the future.

[00:35:10] And if you’re in his hands you never need to fear.

[00:35:14] The future anymore. Let’s pray.

[00:35:20] For God we are so anxious about so many many things and. We kind of take you off the throne. Sometimes we. Will even try to manipulate our lives. For the outcome that we want. When we should just rest in your control.

[00:35:41] In your love. So Lord I pray at any time that we might be anxious might be fearful about something that you’d remind us. That you’re in control. Now there may be something you would have us do. Maybe some of the things that we go through. Are as a result of decisions bad decisions that we are we have made. And you would desire us to do something maybe to repent of sin maybe to go make restitution maybe to get right with another person. I don’t know. But Lord I pray. That when we find ourselves anxious and fearful.

[00:36:21] About the future. That we addressed in you. Rest in your arms we would see you holding our hands and taking us. Through the fire if need be in the lion’s den in whatever situation we find ourselves. So I ask again you just bless those who are celebrating their fathers today.

[00:36:45] We thank you again for being our heavenly Father our dad. I pray this in Jesus name Amen.
